| Do you have any female dogs? We get many calls from folks wanting female puppies. I ask them "Why a female?" Some respond "I heard they make better pets... or I've always had females .. or males spray on your furniture." We feel obliged to educate our prospective puppy owners with good solid information regarding the purchase and lifetime commitment made to one of our babies. Neutered males have no desire to breed and lavish all their attentions on their owners. While I love all my poms regardless of sex... even my breeding males are happier to play and spend time with me than my females. The female's main drive is to raise young and protect them. The male's main drive is to entice the female in to a reproductive relationship. Once neutered, the male now will spend his time loving encouraging an affectionate relationship with his beloved owner. Most negative aspects of owning a male can be irradicated with early neutering. (prior to one year of age) This means no humping, no spraying, no aggression (although most socialized and well bred poms will not have aggression problems) Dominance issues can be displayed by both female and male alike. Common displays include humping behaviors, defecating inappropriately, barking and even biting. It is in their nature to be dominant and therefore more worthy of passing on genetic material to offspring. You've heard the term "ALPHA". Plenty of female pom's want to be incharge, whether it's over you or another pet. It can and does happen. Have you ever had a female in heat? When my girls come into their heat cycles, they become very .... moody. I call it PMS.. Pom's Misery Season. They have to wear panties to prevent little messes and any unplanned breedings, since I do not breed them every cycle. And this goes on for 3 whole weeks! In my opinion, males tend to be more fun loving and active only to slow down just long enough to jump in your lap for hugs and kisses. Females tend to settle down with age and become little lap potatoes. This is not to say that you can't have a pom of either sex be more active or sedate. Each of the sexes both have similarities and differences. More similarities than not. Males will look at their owner adoringly while a female will expect her owner to look at Her adoringly! After all, she is the QUEEN of the House! In conclusion, my point here is to help you make a wise decision based on facts, rather than old wive's tales or unfounded information. My advice, look at the quality of the puppies, then personality, then sex and color or vise versa. You'll have no problems finding your new best friend for his/her lifetime! |
